Announcing the name change, Erion Veliaj, the mayor of Tirana said: ‘Our generation will be marked by this bloody Russian aggression, and the heroic resistance of Ukraine should be remembered in our public places.

‘The Russians will have to work, live and get their mail on a Free Ukraine street address.’

The street was previously named after the wife of Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg and is also home to the embassies of Serbia, Kosovo and Ukraine.

In Lithuania, Remigijus Šimašius, the Mayor of Vilnius, announced on March 3, anyone visiting the city’s Russian Embassy would be directed to Ukrainian Heroes Street.

Announcing on Twitter Mr Šimašius said: ‘Russian Embassy’s ??new address in Vilnius: Ukrainian heroes – 2.

‘I suspect that the post will not necessarily deliver the letters if the address is given incorrectly.’

In the UK, council chiefs in Edinburgh are being urged to rename the street where the Russian consulate in Scotland is based.

They reportedly want Melville Street in Edinburgh to instead be called Zelensky Street.

In a letter to Adam McVey the leader of Edinburgh City Council, Mr Cole-Hamilton said:

‘We must seek to shame Putin at every possible opportunity.

‘As such, everyone visiting or writing to the consulate should be reminded of Putin’s murderous and destructive invasion of Ukraine.’
