Ogun’s Multidimensional Human Development Index Survey
The Ogun State Government has announced its plans to conduct household surveys aimed at developing a framework for effective planning, management, and evaluation of the multidimensional poverty human development index. This survey, which goes beyond the existing Multi-dimensional Poverty Index by the National Bureau of Statistics, will enable the government, led by Prince Dapo Abiodun, to assess the impact of various policies implemented over the past four and a half years in areas such as education, health, job creation, empowerment, and other social interventions.
To carry out this important survey, the state government has enlisted the services of E-services Nigeria Limited, a consultant contracted for a 27-week period. Working in collaboration with the Ogun State Bureau of Statistics, the consultant will conduct a General Household Survey to gather key indicators essential for designing and monitoring the implementation of various State Development Plans (SDPs).
The consultant has already begun its work on March 6th, and the survey will provide the state government with crucial baselines for different data points across the state. This will enable the implementation of strategies that have been earmarked for execution under the “Building Our Future Together” mantra of the Abiodun-led administration. This administration has consistently pursued the ISEYA development agenda, focusing on infrastructure, energy, water supply, education, job creation, and women’s empowerment.
Under the infrastructure pillar, the government has demonstrated inclusivity by bringing development to every ward in the state’s 20 local government areas. Over 500 kilometers of roads have been constructed, reconstructed, and rehabilitated, ensuring equitable development across different regions. Additionally, the administration has made significant strides in the energy sector, installing over 500 transformers through the Community Electrification Project and improving power supply in all local government areas. Solar street lights, solar boreholes for clean water, and the distribution of solar home kits to rural communities have also been provided.
A major achievement in the water sector includes the rehabilitation of the Arakanga Waterworks in Abeokuta, ensuring a reliable supply of potable water. New water storage facilities have been constructed, and the water supply and reticulation network have been expanded to numerous streets and neighborhoods. The administration is currently planning to further expand the water distribution network and rehabilitate mini waterworks in other parts of the state.
In terms of transportation, Ogun State is leading the way in energy transition by deploying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, becoming the first state in Nigeria to do so. These buses have been deployed on routes from Abeokuta to Mowe/Ibafo to Lagos, aiming to reduce transport fares and facilitate the movement of people and goods between rural and urban areas.
The Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport and its associated businesses in the aerotropolis are expected to generate over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing significantly to job creation and economic growth in the state. The government has also prioritised automating business processes to enhance efficiency and improve the Ease of Doing Business Index.
Education and human capital development remain key priorities, with the renovation and construction of over 1,200 classrooms and buildings across all 234 wards. This effort is complemented by the provision of over 50,000 new desks and chairs, learning materials, and the implementation of the OgunDigiClass initiative, which utilises technology for virtual learning. The shortage of teachers in public schools is being addressed through the recruitment of 5,000 teaching interns under the OGUNTEACH program, along with the conversion of 1,000 teachers from the program to permanent employment.
The Ogun Job Portal, launched in 2019, has successfully matched thousands of applicants with employment opportunities in various sectors of the economy. In healthcare, the government has rehabilitated, equipped, and staffed 100 primary healthcare centers across the state, ensuring quality healthcare services for the people.
Efforts to empower women include their active involvement in politics, governance, and economic activities, as well as providing education for girls. Through the Oko’wo Dapo Women’s Empowerment scheme, over 50,000 women have grown their businesses, and with additional funding from the Federal Government’s Nigeria for Women Project, the total investment in women’s empowerment has reached approximately N1.5 billion.
The government’s commitment to improving living standards is evident in various interventions, including the construction of 4,000 housing units and ongoing projects such as the development of high-end duplexes, affordable housing units, and the regeneration of GRA schemes.
The state’s fiscal performance has also been commendable, with BudgIT ranking Ogun State 7th in the 2023 overall Fiscal Performance Ranking and 1st in terms of most improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) among the 36 states and the FCT. This recognition further solidifies Ogun State’s position as an attractive investment destination and one of the most resilient states.
