Soldier found dead at military base

A British soldier has been found dead at the country’s largest military base.

The British Army confirmed that a soldier passed away on Saturday at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.  But his name, rank, or regiment wasn’t revealed.

In a statement, an Army spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm the death of a soldier on February 5, 2022.

‘The circumstances surrounding this death are being investigated and it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time.

‘Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends.’

Cattertick Garrison is the largest military base in Britain and is home to 13,000 Armed Forces personnel from several units including the 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and the Royal Lancers.

The death of the soldier is not the first to have occurred at the barracks.  Lance Corporal Ryan MacKenzie was found unresponsive in his bathroom of a Munster Barracks in August.

An inquest opening in October reported his cause of death as ‘hanging’ but it was adjourned for a later date.

Another personnel member, Lance Corporal Bernard Mongan, was found dead in his bedroom at the barracks in January 2020.  It is believed he died around New Year although his body was not discovered for around three weeks.

He was in the Royal Corps of Signal but had been on attachment to the Intelligence Corps, and was due to transfer to another base in January.  His death is also being looking into with a full inquest.
